Immigrant visas to the United States are processed for citizens and residents of Bangladesh at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka.
To apply for an immigrant visa, a foreign citizen seeking to immigrate generally must be sponsored by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident immediate relative(s), or prospective U.S. employer, and have an approved petition before applying for an immigrant visa. The sponsor begins the process by filing a petition on the foreign citizen’s behalf with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Then, follow the steps on the Immigrant Visa Process on usvisas.state.gov to begin applying for an immigrant visa.
Once USCIS has approved your petition and you have completed pre-processing with the National Visa Center (NVC), review the instructions given to you by the NVC, along with the information presented on this website, for further guidance and instructions.
Effective June 01, 2026, U.S. Embassy, Dhaka has implemented two-day processing for all immigrant visa categories. Visit our Directory of Visa Categories and check the Immigrant Visa Categories for more information.
The applicants must visit the embassy at least twice during the immigrant visa process. For the first visit, they should go to the scheduled appointment made by the National Visa Center (NVC).
No Missing Documents
If there are no missing documents, the review is complete. We will give you an appointment letter that tells you the date and time for the immigrant visa interview (The second appointment). Usually, it will be the same week as the document review.
Missing Documents
If there are missing documents, we will give you a letter that lists the documents that are missing. It will have instructions for rescheduling your second interview with a consular officer.
Effective January 21, 2026, the Department of State is pausing all immigrant visa issuances to nationals of 75 countries, including Bangladesh, whose immigrants have a high rate of collecting public assistance at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer. Immigrant visa applicants who are nationals of impacted countries may submit visa applications and attend interviews, and the Department of State will continue to schedule applicants for appointments, but no immigrant visas will be issued to nationals of these countries during this pause. A Note Regarding Visa Availability
The issuance of family sponsored and employment based preference visas are numerically limited by congress. Interviews for applicants in these categories are scheduled when the applicant’s priority date becomes current and visa numbers are available. However, priority dates may change, and it is possible that at the time of the interview, visa numbers may no longer be available. If visa numbers are no longer available for your visa category, your interview will proceed as scheduled, but your visa not be issued until the priority date again becomes current and new numbers are available. Applicants should check the Visa Bulletin on the Department of State’s website for up to date information on priority dates for all immigrant visa categories.
