ABOUT CTAS
The Fiscal Year 2026 Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) is a competitive award program designed to provide funding directly to federally recognized tribes and tribal consortia to develop a comprehensive and coordinated approach to improve public safety and victim services in tribal communities. It enables federally recognized tribes and tribal consortia to submit a single application for eight of the Department of Justice’s competitive grant programs (additional information and helpful resources). The FY 2026 CTAS NOFO refers to the DOJ’s tribal government-specific competitive grant programs as purpose areas (PA).
CTAS Purpose Area #1: Tribal Resources Grant Program (TRGP)
Funding is used to hire or rehire sworn career law enforcement officers, tribal/village police officers, and village public safety officers (under TRGP-Hiring) as well as to procure basic equipment and training (under TRGP-Equipment and Training) to assist in the initiation or enhancement of tribal community policing efforts to advance public safety objectives.

Up to $32 million in funding is available for FY 2026 TRGP. TRGP-Hiring awards provides 5 years (60 months) of funding for entry-level salaries and fringe benefits for full-time newly hired or rehired sworn career law enforcement officers including tribal/village police officers village public safety officers, and school resource officers. TRGP-E/T awards provides 3 years (36 months) of funding.
There is no local cost share (matching funds) requirement.
CTAS in Action: Nebraska and Kansas-based Native American police use DOJ grant to upgrade technology, improve public safety
Since 2010, the Department of Justice has awarded over 2,000 grants totaling more than $943 million in CTAS grant funds to hundreds of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The tribes are using these funds to enhance law enforcement; combat domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sex trafficking; bolster justice systems; prevent and control juvenile delinquency; strengthen the juvenile justice system; and serve sexual assault and elders.
