Americans in Conversation with High School Students in Germany

Curious about the U.S.?

What is the American Dream?
What does a typical school day in the U.S. look like?
How does the U.S. election system work?

Or perhaps you have heard:

Americans only eat fast food.
Americans are superficial.
Americans don’t care about environmental protection.

These are common questions and stereotypes young Germans might have about the United States. The MeetUS program aims to provide clarity by connecting U.S. citizens living in Germany and U.S. Embassy/Consulate staff with German secondary school students. Through open dialogue, the program fosters understanding and breaks down misconceptions about American life.

MeetUS is a key cultural outreach initiative of the U.S. Mission to Germany and supported by Fulbright Germany. It offers free sessions to secondary schools across the country, coordinated by the Fulbright Commission and the Public Affairs Sections of U.S. Embassy Berlin and U.S. Consulates.

How It Works

American speakers— Fulbright scholarship holders currently living in Germany —engage students in discussions about U.S. society, culture, history, and current transatlantic issues. These sessions are informal and tailored to complement school curricula, focusing on personal insights rather than academic lectures. After a brief introduction, speakers encourage open dialogue, answering questions and addressing students’ curiosities. Discussions can be held in English or German, either in person or virtual.

Occasionally, student groups may visit the U.S. Embassy or Consulates for discussions with American diplomats, depending on availability.

Get Involved

To request a MeetUS session with a Fulbright grantee, register online via Fulbright Germany.
To request an engagement with a U.S. diplomat, contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your region. Please be aware that opportunities are limited.

MeetUS is your chance to foster understanding, challenge stereotypes, and build connections between Germany and the United States.
