He previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden, where he strengthened transatlantic ties and advanced shared priorities in defense and security, trade and investment, technology and innovation, and Arctic cooperation.
Ambassador Howery is a co-founder and former partner of Founders Fund, a leading San Francisco-based venture capital firm managing over $15 billion in assets. Prior to Founders Fund, he co-founded PayPal, where he served as the company’s first Chief Financial Officer, helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars in private financing, and helped guide the company through its successful IPO and sale to eBay.
Following his tenure as Ambassador to Sweden, Ambassador Howery remained active as an angel investor, supporting a wide range of innovative ventures and other projects.
