Alert: Second Round of National Elections on April 13

Event: The second round of Ecuadorian national elections will be held all day on Sunday, April 13. As previously reported in our message to U.S. citizens on January 22, 2024, U.S. citizens should expect a heavy police and military presence throughout Ecuador on voting day, which will be concentrated at polling sites and voting centers that tend to be located in schools. Demonstrations or crowds could arise with little advance notice, both on election day and subsequent days as results are announced. While demonstrations could occur anywhere, locations around government buildings and polling sites could be especially affected. You may encounter road closures and other traffic disruptions when traveling in affected areas, particularly in the vicinity of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) headquarters, the Hilton Colon in Quito, and the historic center near the Presidential Palace.
Actions to Take:
- Maintain extra vigilance, avoid crowds on election day, follow all local laws, and monitor credible local media sources for updates.
- Monitor ECU911 for information on road closures.
Track official communications from the Government of Ecuador for additional information and updates. - Review the Travel Advisory and safety and security information for Ecuador at Travel.State.Gov.
