U.S. Citizen Services at U.S. Mission Ecuador

The American Citizen Services sections at U.S. Mission Ecuador can assist with the following:

  • A U.S. Citizen that had child in Ecuador and would like to transfer the U.S. Citizenship. A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) application needs to be submitted.
  • In the tragic event that a U.S. Citizen passes away in Ecuador, we can issue a Report of Death Abroad, equivalent to a U.S. Death Certificate and provide some assistance related to the Death of a U.S. Citizen in Ecuador.
  • If a U.S. Citizen has been arrested while in Ecuador, we can provide Assistance to an Incarcerated U.S. Citizen.
  • If a U.S. Citizen is without any funds in Ecuador, has tried all the options under Emergency Financial Assistance, and would like to return to the United States. We can provide guidance for a Repatriation Loan.
  • If a U.S. Citizen has come to Ecuador and a significant amount of time has passed since there was any contact with that person, we may be able to assist in Locating a Missing U.S. Citizen.
  • If a U.S. Citizen would like to renounce to U.S. Citizenship; an application for a Certificate of Loss of Nationality can be submitted at U.S. Mission Ecuador.
  • Providing limited assistance with Federal Benefits to U.S. Citizens in Ecuador like Applying for a Social Security Numbers when a person is 12 years old or older, trying to reach out to Veteran Affairs or Office of Personnel Management, or Delivering Federal Correspondence (checks for tax refunds and others).

Entering the U.S. Embassy or Consulate

If your service requires an appointment or if you are required to come in person to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in Ecuador, you will be required to enter the Consular Section.  Our Consular Sections holds Visa and U.S. Passport applicants in the waiting room.

 

Please keep in mind the following information before you attend your appointment:

  • There is no parking on site. There are private parking lots available within a short walking distance on a hill in Quito, and within one kilometer in Guayaquil.
  • In Quito, there is no place close by to take pictures or make copies. Make sure you have all the requirements before coming to the Embassy or you will be sent away to bring what you are missing.
  • You do not need to wait on the long line.  Please approach one of the greeters and point out that you have an appointment for with the American Citizens Services section.
  • You will need to go through security filters to enter the Consular Section. This involves going through metal detectors, having security personnel check you and your belongings, and comply with the security rules and regulations.
  • You will not be able to bring purses or backpacks, and there is no place for us to keep them for you.  Please leave them with a person you trust or in a safe place before entering.
  • You will not be able to bring electronics inside the Consular Section. If you bring your cellphone, you can leave them with the guards.
  • We strongly recommend that you bring cash, if you have not paid using Pay.gov.  If there is no connectivity to pay with credit card, you will be required to leave the premises to withdraw cash in an ATM and the closest one is not nearby.
  • If you are coming in with a baby, a stroller and a diaper bag will be allowed. Make sure you bring food and everything you might need for a couple of hours until you have your appointment.
  • You are welcome to bring books, non-electric toys and any material that can keep your child busy for at least an hour.

Reasonable Accommodation

If you need reasonable accommodation for your appointment, we encourage you to request your accommodation immediately once you schedule your appointment. We make every effort to provide accommodations to persons with disabilities and medical conditions. Reasonable accommodations vary, depending on the situation and the person’s needs.
Examples of accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • If you require a private appointment due to a medical condition or disability, we may schedule an alternative time for you to come in for your interview.
  • If you or your child has special needs that requires a private appointment in a quiet space without distractions, we may schedule an alternative time for you or your family to come in for your interview.
  • If you are unable to speak, you may be allowed to respond to questions in an agreed-upon nonverbal manner such as using pen and paper.
  • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
  • If you have low vision, we may provide you with communications in large print.

The waiting room of the Consular Section and its restroom is wheelchair-accessible.

Third Party Attendance at Passport and CRBA Appointment Interviews

The U.S. Department of State allows applicants to be accompanied during their interview process. You may bring someone else with you to your appointment, such as an attorney, an interpreter, a healthcare aid, or a family member. The individual will be subject to standard security and screening procedures, including prohibiting the entry of bags and electronic devices.

Remember that all minor applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or individual acting ‘in loco parentis’ with the permission of the legal guardian.
