The U.S. Embassy in Kenya opened in 1964. Sixteen Ambassadors since then, the Embassy has enriched the ties between the American and Kenyan people and served the needs of Americans in and around this East African hub. Chief among the U.S. Mission’s goals are fostering the development of a sound Kenyan economy, strengthening the institutions of Kenyan democracy, helping to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, and promoting U.S./Kenyan business ties.

PEPFAR KenyaPEPFAR is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. Since 2004, the US government has invested at least 6.5 billion dollars in Kenya. In just eleven years, PEPFAR has moved from an emergency program to one squarely focused on controlling the epidemic.
The United States Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) works with the staff of these organizations and with the representatives of other member states to cooperatively advance the U.S. objectives of protecting the environment and finding solutions to the phenomenon of rapid urbanization, while reducing poverty and promoting economic growth.
The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a United States Trade Act, enacted on 18 May 2000 as Public Law 106 of the 200th Congress. AGOA has since been renewed to 2025. The legislation significantly enhances market access to the US for qualifying Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries.
After almost 8 years of absence, Peace Corps Kenya is coming back with opportunities for volunteers in the Health, Education and Deaf Education sectors. The program is initially opening in Kenya’s Western and Nyanza regions of Kakamega, Kisumu and Siaya, with a view to gradually expanding into other regions of the country as need are assessed and resources made available.
