Exchanges

The Educational Exchanges Section of the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy works with the Vilnius Educational Advising Center to provide information to interested students about university undergraduate and post graduate academic study programs in the United States. This section also manages a range of academic and professional exchanges and scholarship programs in the U.S., including the Fulbright program, Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship program or the International Visitors program (IVLP).

In addition to academic and professional exchanges, the Educational and Cultural Sections work with Lithuanian universities, teacher training institutions, and other academic, cultural, governmental and nongovernmental organizations to support English Language Teaching programs, development of civic education curricula. In keeping with our objectives to increase understanding about U.S. society and policies, and to broaden dialogue between Americans and U.S. institutions and their Lithuanian counterparts, the U.S. Embassy invites American speakers and specialists, distributes publications in both English and Lithuanian and sponsors programs related to such issues as U.S. foreign policy, U.S.-Lithuanian relations, support for the development of democratic institutions and a democratic society, rule of law, and American culture, history and society.

Higher Education

Higher education in the United States is multi-faceted and decentralized. As of the 2021-2022 academic year, there were approximately 3,500 degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the United States, including both four-year and two-year institutions. Among them, around 1,600 are public institutions operated by states, cities, or counties, while more than 1,700 are private colleges and universities. Community colleges make up the majority of two-year institutions and serve as a practical entry point for students taking introductory or general core courses. As of fall 2024, over 19 million students were registered in U.S. institutions of higher learning, with approximately 13.5 million attending public colleges and universities. Women make up the majority (over 59%) of university students in the United States. Additionally, about 40% of students attend part-time, many while employed.

SUSI for Scholars

U.S. Embassy in Lithuania is accepting applications from scholars to participate in the 2024 summer SUSI program. Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars (SUSI) are intensive fully funded post-graduate level academic programs with integrated study tours whose purpose is to provide foreign university faculty and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions.

SUSI For Student Leaders

U.S. Embassy in Lithuania is pleased to invite candidates for the summer Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) on Environmental Issues. Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders from Europe are intensive short term academic programs whose purpose is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills.

Exchange Alumni: Resources & Opportunities

The U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, together with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has sent more than 1300 Lithuanian academic and professional exchange participants to the U.S., and about 300 Americans have come to Lithuania to study, teach and conduct research. People-to-people exchanges enhance mutual understanding between the U.S. and Lithuania.

ECA exchange program alumni encompass over 1 million people around the world. The Department of State is committed to providing resources that allow alumni to expand upon their U.S. exchange experiences to address shared global challenges and use the skills they developed to make an impact in their own communities.
