Event: As advised on Travel.State.Gov, the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory for Libya is at Level 4: Do Not Travel. This advisory remains in effect due to crime, terrorism, unexploded landmines, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict.
As noted in the Departments’ Travel Advisory, outbreaks of violence between competing armed groups can occur with little warning and have the potential to impact U.S. citizens. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli suspended its operations in 2014. U.S. citizens in Libya who are in need of emergency assistance should contact the consular section of the U.S Embassy in Tunis.
We recommend that U.S. citizens who choose to remain in Libya despite the current Level 4 Advisory prepare contingency plans for emergency situations.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid large crowds, gatherings, and demonstrations.
- Be unpredictable in your movements by varying times and routes used and maintaining a low profile.
- Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
- Be prepared to shelter in place should the situation deteriorate.
- Review your personal security plans.
- Keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency.
- Exercise caution, monitor the news closely for breaking developments that could affect internal security, and factor updated information into your travel plans and activities.
- Have a contingency plan for emergencies and review the Traveler’s Checklist .
- Enroll and encourage other U.S. citizens in Syria to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts.
