The
Open
Geospatial Consortium provides a specification for serving geographic information through the web
as georeferenced images that are
tiled, divided into regularly-sized units, and
cached,
for quick delivery; this is called the
Web
Map Tile Service specification. In addition to providing a visible representation of selected geospatial
data, it allows the scientific attributes of the data to be queried geographically. The services listed
below conform to the WMTS specification version 1.0.0.
Note: These tile services will work most reliably if your client requests specify the TileMatrixSet parameter value GoogleMapsCompatible. That's because the map interfaces on MRData.usgs.gov use that value, and consequently those tiles are more consistently and completely populated.
