The U.S. Embassy in Bucharest sponsors and facilitates a wide range of educational and cultural programs. Cultural Section promotes cultural and educational programs in order to help Romanians to learn more about American society and its values.
International Visitor Leadership Program
The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. Professional meetings reflect the participants’ professional interests and support the foreign policy goals of the United States.
Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission
Fulbright academic and scientific exchanges between the U.S. and Romania started in the 1961.
As a result of the agreement concluded between the U.S. and the Romanian Governments on July 30, 1992, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission was established in 1993. As a signatory party, the Romanian Government acknowledges the mission of the Fulbright program and pledges financial contributions toward it.
Since its inauguration in May 1993, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission has administered an educational and cultural exchange program between the two countries and has offered scholarships on a nationwide competitive basis. Over 3,000 students, teachers, and scholars from both countries benefiting from this program.
Fulbright Program
The Fulbright Program offers exchange opportunities to Romanian citizens – scholars, students and professionals – for study, research and teaching in the United States. These grants are supported by the U.S. and Romanian Governments and awarded through open merit-based competitions supervised by bi-national panels.
Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars and Secondary Educators
Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Scholars and Secondary Educators are post-graduate level academic programs for mid-career foreign scholars, faculty, practitioners, and secondary educators whose purpose is to strengthen curricula and to improve the teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad. SUSIs for Scholars are six-weeks long; SUSIs for Secondary Educators are five-weeks.
Open World Program
The Open World program is a ten-day professional exchange built on the foundational values of authentic communication and immersive cultural experiences. Starting in Washington, D.C., delegates explore the concepts of American federalism, culture, and leadership.
Delegates engage with Members of Congress and their staff to discuss common challenges and participate in unfiltered dialogue. Traveling to communities across the United States, delegates meet with their professional counterparts to share expertise and establish lasting partnerships.
Community Solutions Program
The Community Solutions Program (CSP) is a professional development program for the best and brightest global community leaders working on issues related to the environment, tolerance and conflict resolution, transparency and accountability, and women. Community Solutions is a year-long program that includes a four-month fellowship at a U.S. community-based organization, government office or legislative body.
Young Transatlantic Innovative Leaders Initiative Fellowship (YTILI)
The Young Transatlantic Innovation Leaders Initiative (YTILI) Fellowship Program is a two-way exchange program for emerging entrepreneurs ages 25-35 from Europe. The program’s goal is to promote mutual understanding, enhance entrepreneurship and leadership skills, and build lasting partnerships between business leaders from Europe and the United States. YTILI Fellows spend five weeks in the United States including an opening program, entrepreneurship training, individually-tailored placements with businesses or relevant organizations, and participation in a closing event in Washington, D.C. American participants then travel to Europe to support a regional summit and work with YTILI Fellows on joint projects in their workplaces and communities.
International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa
The Fall Residency is a component of the International Writing Program (IWP) and is the oldest and largest multicultural writing residency in the world. The Fall Residency brings outstanding authors from every continent to the University of Iowa, with the goal to provide authors with the setting for cultural exchange and also with the time and space to write, read, translate, study, and to become part of the vibrant literary and academic community at the University of Iowa.
Online Professional English Network (OPEN)
The Online Professional English Network (OPEN) Program offers foreign English teaching professionals the opportunity to take innovative, online university-level classes and online professional development programming for teachers through FHI360.
Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX)
The goal of the program is to promote mutual understanding between citizens of the United States and countries in the region, so that high school students learn more about the US and introduce Americans to their home countries. Each scholar will live for a year as a member of an American family and study in an American high school.
Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship
Intensive four-week academic fellowship hosted by a U.S. college or university for high school students between ages 16-18. These programs are academic in nature, and focus on global issues, in addition to leadership and community service.
International Exchange Alumni
In August 2013, the Romanian U.S. Alumni Association was formed as a legal entity. Membership is open to alumni of all United States Government exchange programs. They engage alumni from throughout the country in various programs and activities such as round-table discussions and speaker programs.
