Vine by Vine - Conserving Water with Landsat

California's Central Valley feeds a quarter of the nation, which requires a LOT of water. Landsat's thermal sensors measure surface temperature from 438 miles up, revealing exactly how much water crops are using — cooler vines are well-watered, warmer ones are thirsty. That insight helped E. & J. Gallo Winery work toward cutting vineyard water use in half, and laid the groundwork for OpenET, a free platform now serving all 48 contiguous states.
