A child born to a U.S. citizen parent usually acquires U.S. citizenship at birth. More detailed information on the acquisition of U.S. citizenship is available on the main webpage of the Consular Affairs Bureau of the Department of State. The same webpage contains information on how to obtain a Report of Birth Abroad of a U.S. Citizen. Parents may download the Application DS-2029 for the Consular Report of Birth Abroad. The Report of Birth Abroad is the child’s proof of U.S. citizenship and can be used to acquire a U.S. passport. Parents are encouraged to contact the Embassy as soon as possible after the birth of the child.

If the child was born out-of-wedlock (see Acquisition of U.S. Citizenship by a Child Born Abroad for clarification) to a U.S. citizen father, Affidavit of Parentage, Physical Presence and Support is a required document to submit.  Completing this form prior to the visit to the Consular Section to apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad will save our customers time and is therefore, recommended.

Note:

Applicants must have a Login.gov account to access eCRBA services on the MyTravelGov portal. Instructions for creating a Login.gov account are available at MyTravel.state.gov. If you already have an eCRBA application in progress, use the same email address previously used to access the MyTravelGov website to create and account. This ensures a streamlined linkage between your existing profile and the new authentication system.

Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA)

A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is a formal document certifying the acquisition of United States citizenship at birth for a person born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents who meet the requirements for transmitting citizenship under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

CRBA applications must be made before the child’s 18th birthday. We recommend that parents apply for the CRBA as soon as possible after the child’s birth.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, your child must have been born outside the United States, and your child must accompany you to the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent for the in-person interview.

To be eligible to apply for a CRBA online, you MUST answer YES to all the following criteria:

  1. Was the child born outside the United States?
  2. Is the child under the age of 18?
  3. Was at least one parent a U.S. citizen when the child was born?
  4. Are you the biological parent of the child born abroad?
  5. Can you use an internationally accepted credit/debit card or a direct payment method from a U.S. dollar denominated bank account (also known as “ACH”) to pay online for your Consular Report of Birth Abroad application?

How to Apply Online

The online feature allows U.S. citizen parents to complete a CRBA application online, upload all required documents, and submit payment prior to the in-person interview.

  1. To apply for a CRBA online, you need to create a MyTravelGov account or sign-in to your existing account. MyTravelGov is a secured, encrypted portal that you can use to start an eCRBA application or access an existing eCRBA application.
  2. Once you have created a MyTravelGov account you can access eCRBA and submit your application online. The easy-to-use online process provides applicants with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the application. You may review the necessary documents for the CRBA application in advance by reviewing this checklist.
  3. Once you complete the online application and submit payment, you will then be directed to schedule your appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent. You can make an appointment using the online calendar. Please schedule your appointment a minimum of 5 working days after payment submission. If your payment has not cleared before your interview, we will not be able to proceed with your interview. Please note: Do NOT make another (or duplicate) payment for a CRBA ($100) at the Embassy.
  4. Attend your scheduled in-person interview with your child, original documents, and their photocopies (single-sided). Original documents will be returned to you after reviewing your application. You must provide English translations for all foreign language documents. The child must be present at the time of application. Generally, both parents also attend the interview.
