What is the Great American Expedition? 

The Great American Expedition celebrates the communities, the partners, and Department of the Interior professionals who steward the natural resources that sustain our nation. Each stop of the Great American Expedition captures the story of the place and its caretakers, building a national record of stewardship that honors America’s first 250 years and looks ahead to the next. Activities can include cultural heritage celebrations, outdoor recreation, and projects that strengthen connections to public lands and enhance shared spaces. 

Why the Great American Expedition? 

The Great American Expedition is a unique opportunity to highlight the outstanding work the Department of the Interior’s partner groups are doing every day across America. From hunting on our nation’s public lands to restoring trails at national wildlife refuges and connecting families and communities to the outdoors, these everyday experiences showcase the very best of America. By joining the Great American Expedition, organizations will help tell these important stories, strengthen public awareness of their mission, and demonstrate the lasting impact their partnership has on preserving and enhancing America’s public lands and outdoor traditions for generations to come. 

How do I participate in a Great American Expedition Event? 

To host an expedition event, four elements are required: 

1. An external non-governmental organization
2. An activity celebrating heritage, recreation, or resource restoration
3. Take place on a DOI asset or a location where DOI has played a role
4. A photo(s) featuring the Expedition flag

If you are interested in developing a Great American Expedition event taking place between May 2026 and December 2026, please contact Nathan Naidu. Please include: the name of your organization, event location, a short summary of the activity or project, and the project dates.

You can reach out to the Department of the Interior to coordinate an event and take photographs with our flag. Email Nathan Naidu. 

You also can make your own flags, and although not required, if you prefer to purchase your own Great American Flag, they are available for purchase through Freedom250.org.
