Under passport regulations, an individual may not possess more than one passport of any one type (tourist, official, diplomatic) at the same time. On occasion, the Department of State will make an exception to this policy for individuals who travel extensively and often for business purposes. These second passports are issued for a validity of two to four years, provided a valid justification for issuance exists. Processing time takes about 4-5 weeks.
The Department of State may approve issuance of a second passport when:
- An individual travels so frequently that their passport is needed both for travel and submission for foreign visa applications simultaneously.
- Another country denies visa issuance because of markings or visas showing travel to certain countries in the current passport.
1. Correct form
Use the Online form-filler to establish which form you need and print it. Take note of the instructions at the end of which documents you are required to submit with your application, if any. You can already sign and date the Form DS-82, but don’t sign the form DS-11, yet.
2. Photo
Include a passport photo (see photo instructions). 2’’x 2’’ (51mm x 51mm) U.S. size is required, the European size is too small. The photo cannot be older than 6 months.
3. Documents
In addition to any documents mentioned when you completed the online form, you must submit the following:
- Your current passport (if you are renewing an already existing second passport, you must submit this second passport).
- The form Request for a Second Passport (pdf/36kb)
- A written statement in English from your employer, on company letterhead, justifying the need for a second passport and stating the bearer’s understanding that any loss or theft of either passport will be reported immediately to the nearest Consulate, Embassy, or passport agency.
4. If applicable
If you never had a U.S. Social Security number, complete and submit this form with your passport application. If the applicant is a minor, use this form.
5. Fee
Check the current fee, depending on your application form. You can either pay online and bring the payment confirmation, or pay by credit card only at the time of the appointment.
6. Envelope
You must include a self-addressed A5 envelope with 6.60 Euros in stamps, according to our instructions (pdf/293kb). Please note that we can only mail passports to addresses in Austria, no other option is possible.
