Eligibility Requirements
A Consular Report of Birth (CRBA) is evidence of United States citizenship, issued to children born abroad to U.S. citizen parent(s) who meet the conditions laid out under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). CRBA applications must be made before the child’s 18th birthday. We recommend that parents apply for the CRBA as soon as possible after the child’s birth. Parents should apply for their child’s first U.S. Passport at the same time as applying for their CRBA.

Step 1: Head to MyTravelGov to create your profileTo apply for a CRBA online, you need to create a MyTravelGov account or sign-in to your existing account. MyTravelGov is a secured, encrypted portal that you can use to start an eCRBA application or access an existing eCRBA application.
Once you sign in or create a MyTravelGov account you can access eCRBA and submit your application online. The easy-to-use online process provides applicants with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the application. You may review the necessary documents for the CRBA application in advance by reviewing our checklist below
Once you complete the online application and submit payment, you will then be directed to schedule your appointment at the Consulate General serving your area. Please schedule your appointment at least 72 hours after payment submission. This provides time for your payment to be processed prior to your CRBA interview.

Important: The applicant (child) and at least one parent (preferably the U.S. citizen parent) must be present at the appointment at the U.S. Consulate.

Step 3: Submit payment online
Once you complete the online application and submit payment, you will then be directed to schedule your appointment at the Consulate General serving your area. Please schedule your appointment at least 72 hours after payment submission. This provides time for your payment to be processed prior to your CRBA interview.

Step 4: Schedule an appointment

If the transmission requirements have been met, the following documentation is required for a CRBA application.
- Applicant
The applicant (child) and at least one parent, preferably the U.S. citizen parent, must be present at the U.S. Consulate. - Affidavit
If the U.S. citizen parent is not able to attend the appointment, they must complete the Form DS-5507: Affidavit of Parentage, Physical Presence and Support (PDF 287 KB), have it notarized by a Public Notary (in the U.S.) or Justice of the Peace (in Australia), which must be submitted in their absence. - Birth Certificate
Child’s full birth certificate, as issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Decorative copies of the birth certificate are not accepted. - Marriage Certificate
Parents’ registered marriage certificate (if applicable) - For parents who were previously married
Evidence of termination of any previous marriages (if applicable) - Parent(s) U.S. citizenship
U.S. citizen parent(s)’ evidence of U.S. citizenship (U.S. passport or naturalization certificate) - Physical Presence Requirement
U.S. citizen parent’s documentary evidence of physical presence in the United States prior to the child’s birth. Such evidence may include (but is not limited to) academic transcripts, employment records, periods of honorable U.S. military service records, or wage and tax statements (W-2)’s - Envelope
One self-addressed, Express Post or Registered Post envelope for the return of the CRBA and passport (minimum A4 sized). To avoid unnecessary delays with your application, see the information regarding accepted return postage options
Applying for your child’s first U.S. passport at the same time
