History

Since J.A. Henriques was appointed Consul in 1852, the United States of America has maintained a consulate in Melbourne, Australia.

The Consulate General moved to its present location on St. Kilda Road in 1990 and works to promote close ties between the United States and Australia.

The Consular District covered by Consulate General Melbourne includes Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory, which comprises approximately 35% of Australia’s population and land area.

Consular Operations

Consular services offered in Melbourne include assistance to American citizens, issuance of passports and determinations of U.S. citizenship, and visa services to Australians and other foreign nationals. Consular Services are provided by appointment only. For general inquiries:

    • Visit the Melbourne U.S. Citizens Services Navigator page. The Navigator will guide you through a series of questions to get you to one of our specialists at the U.S. Consulate General Melbourne faster. Inquiries are answered by the ACS Unit at the Consulate throughout the business day; however more complex inquiries are generally responded to within 1-2 business days.
    • Inquiries sent over the weekend or on Australian and U.S. public holidays will be responded to on the next business day.

Public Affairs Section

The Public Affairs Section is responsible for public outreach in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory through information and cultural programming.

Political and Economic Section

This section follows important political and economic developments in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory and maintains contact and liaison with the state governments and local federal government officials.

Administrative Section

The Administrative section provides the full range of support services to the Consulate General, including communications, personnel, customs and shipping, contracting, procurement and warehousing, information management, budget and fiscal, residential and commercial leasing, security and general services.
