Alaska State Rail Plan

Welcome to the website for the Alaska State Rail Plan.

Railroads helped shape Alaska’s history and the development of its natural resources. Today, rail remains a key piece of Alaska’s transportation system, with more than 65 percent of the state’s population living within rail service areas. Railroads can help further regional economic activity through resource development.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) is developing a statewide rail plan. The Alaska State Rail Plan (ASRP), developed with help from agencies and the public, will provide direction for future freight and passenger rail transportation policy in our state. Priorities adopted by the plan will be based on the common interests of stakeholders statewide. When completed, ASRP will also serve as the foundation for federal funding requests to maintain and improve Alaska’s railroads.

January  2017 Update:
The comment period for the draft plan closed March 10th.  We have evaluated all comments received through the Online Open House and have updated for the final document as appropriate.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to review the draft plan and submitted their comments.  The plan is being sent to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for their review and acceptance. We are confident that the final plan will be a useful tool for shaping future rail systems and service in Alaska.
