This summer, five interns spent the summer in Washington, D.C. and one intern served in the Sioux Falls office to experience the work of a congressional office. An internship in Congressman Johnson’s office provides hands-on learning about Congress, policy, and constituent services.

BIG Update
Members of Congress should not be allowed to buy and sell individual stocks. Insider trading is already illegal, and some Members have spent time in prison for it. We should go further, though, banning members from making stock transactions that are legal for other citizens. It looks lousy for a Member of Congress to trade stocks in advance of congressional action, even when based on publicly-available information.

Many in South Dakota continue to experience issues with the United States Postal Service. Delivery delays and lack of service impact families and businesses across the state. This week, I sent a letter outlining the problems that folks are experiencing to the Postmaster General and committed to working with the Postal Service to find solutions.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation’s independence, we have a chance to reflect on the ideals that launched the American experiment. America’s founding was centered on the thought that citizens deserve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In many ways, the semiquincentennial is a reminder that American exceptionalism isn’t a fixed status, it’s a challenge. Each generation must take up these values and preserve them for the next.
