ISS Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) Data Sets
The ISS Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) is a space-based lightning sensor aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS LIS instrument records the time of occurrence of a lightning event, measures the radiant energy and estimates the location during both day and night conditions with high detection efficiency.
NRT (near real-time) = within minutes
NQC (non-quality-controlled) = at the end of the day constructed on data that has not been quality checked
Final standard product constructed after a monthly manual QC process has been applied to flag any bad data
What does Provisional mean?
These ISS LIS data are considered provisional data files indicating that the algorithm is still under development and the data may contain errors. Use the data with caution and do not use for research leading to publications or presentations without consent. Please provide feedback to the data provider.
The original beta algorithm used to produce data available during August- December 2017 has been improved to provide corrections of false lightning detection and timing issues. The provisional algorithm is now used to create these provisional data products (available December 2017 onwards).
NRT: Available within two minutes of observation. There may be data drop outs due to the nature of RT data transmission. These data are appropriate for applications requiring low data latency, but for scientific research please use the standard data product.
NQC: Standard product created daily, after all raw observations for the day have been acquired from ISS. More complete than NRT, but have not had manual review to assure data quality.
Final: Archive version of standard product, after manual QC step to flag any bad data. This version will be archived for the long term and is most appropriate for research. Final (Quality Controlled) data are not yet available.
