Program Overview
The Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship (BFTF) is a four-week, intensive exchange program designed to foster relationships between young Europeans and Americans. Hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, the program runs from June 23 to July 21, 2026. BFTF brings together future leaders to explore shared democratic values, transatlantic relations, and U.S. history and culture through seminars, workshops, community service, cultural activities, and homestays with American families.
Who Should Apply?
We seek candidates who:
- Are born between June 23, 2008, and June 23, 2010 (16–18 years old at program start)
- Are highly proficient in English
- Will enroll in high school or university in their home country in fall 2026
- Demonstrate strong leadership potential and interest in transatlantic relations and diplomacy
- Show a serious interest in learning about the United States
- Have a record of academic achievement and community involvement
- Have had little or no prior U.S. study or travel experience
Successful candidates are mature, responsible, independent, and eager to engage with peers from across Europe and the United States.
Program Funding
The U.S. Department of State covers all program costs.

- Create a video (up to 2 minutes in English): Explain your motivation to join the program and share ideas for follow-on community-development activities upon your return to Latvia.
- Send video via online cloud storage (failiem.lv, etc.): Use a reliable and accessible platform and include the link in your application form.
Deadline: February 12, 2026
Selection Process:
Finalists will be invited for a virtual interview with representatives of the U.S. Embassy Riga. The selected participant will join the program from June 23 to July 21, 2026. Preference is given to those who have not previously traveled to the United States.
