The United States first established diplomatic relations with Montenegro on October 30, 1905. Diplomatic relations resumed in 2006, after the country regained independence. The friendship between the United States and Montenegro extends beyond the national interests of the two countries, to our shared history, culture and values. The USA supports Montenegro’s democratic and economic reforms, and works with all Montenegrins to help build an even more stable, prosperous and democratic society.
After World War I, the U.S. Red Cross was the first foreign organization that came to Montenegro to aid the people in the war-torn country. Alongside American volunteers – doctors and nurses – came photographers. They were inspired by the untouched nature of Montenegro, but also by the courage and resilience of its people. Here, we present a small portion of the extensive photo collection of the American Red Cross Montenegro Mission. The photos in this archive represent a unique and historically invaluable testimony of times gone by. One hundred years ago and now, the United States and Montenegro stand together in solidarity.
The Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) is responsible for the public diplomacy activities of the U.S. Embassy in media relations, cultural activities, and educational programs. It administers and conducts professional and educational exchanges as well as informational and cultural programs for the United States Government in Montenegro. It also oversees the American Corners in Podgorica, Pljevlja and Cetinje which serve as cultural and information centers about the United States. PDS provides support to Montenegrin students seeking to study in the United States through its Education USA Center within the American Corner in Podgorica.
The Defense Attaché Office (DAO) is primarily responsible for representational duties designed to foster positive relations between the U.S. military and the Montenegrin Armed Forces; coordinating with the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs for aircraft and ship clearances, providing country clearances for U.S. military personnel, and providing the Ambassador with military and political-military advice, assistance, and support.
We are a joint service office assigned to facilitate U.S. government national interests; we are responsible for coordinating all aspects of security cooperation and assistance with the Government of Montenegro and the Ministry of Defense.
Through the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) program, the State Department supports Montenegro’s efforts to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate transnational organized crime and narcotics trafficking. Together with its Montenegrin partners, INL Podgorica supports police, prosecutors, defense attorneys, citizens, and judicial officials in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities, all of which helps make Americans and America safer.
The mission of the U.S. Department of Justice’s International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP) is to strengthen national security by advancing U.S. law enforcement operations abroad. ICITAP Program Office of the U.S. Embassy in Montenegro has assisted the development of Montenegro’s law enforcement capabilities since 2006.
The Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad on behalf of the United States to work with communities and create lasting change. It is an international service network of volunteers, community members, host country partners and staff who are driven by the agency’s mission of world peace and friendship.
