Data scientists at NASA’s Marshall, Goddard, and Ames, in partnership with IBM, are working on the Foundation Model Experiments project to investigate and develop the knowledge, workflows, and technologies for building and testing transformer-based artificial intelligence models in the HECC environment. So far, the team’s experiments have shown the value of feeding large volumes of observational data into transformer-based foundation models in order to gain real scientific insight; and that development requires a combination of computer scientists and engineers, along with domain scientists and AI experts to handle high data volume pre-training and to work out technical solutions to bottlenecks in data transfer performance.
