American Citizen Services can assist when U.S. citizens in Niger are arrested, are missing, are victims of violent crime, become ill, die, or otherwise need immediate help.

In the event that your family needs to reach you while you are traveling abroad because of an emergency at home or because they are worried about your welfare, they should call the State Department’s Citizens Emergency Center at 1-888-407-4747 (from the U.S. and Canada) or +1-202-501-4444 (from other countries). The State Department will relay the message to consular officers in the country in which you are traveling. Consular officers will try to locate you, pass on urgent messages, and, consistent with the Privacy Act, report back to your family.

Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes and providing emergency services. These numbers operate 24/7, but they often go unanswered, especially outside normal working hours.

• Dial 15 to reach emergency medical help (Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence or SAMU).
• Dial 18 to reach the fire department.

Appointments for Families

If you have more than one family member to schedule, each family member will need an appointment. If there are no days with enough available appointments to accommodate your family, please schedule as many as possible on the day with the most available appointments. You can then send us an email at ConsulateNiamey@state.gov and explain your situation. We will then do our best to accommodate you.

Public Diplomacy Section & American Cultural Center

The Public Diplomacy Section manages press, cultural, and educational activities for the U.S. Embassy in Niamey and is responsible for coordinating U.S. public diplomacy efforts in Niger. The section is housed in the embassy compound and also includes the American Cultural Center and the Rosa Parks Library. Learn more about our American Spaces.

The Public Diplomacy Section handles all relations between the Embassy and the media, including Nigerien, U.S., and international journalists.  It conducts press conferences, briefings, and interviews; arranges coverage of Embassy programs and activities; organizes dialogues for U.S. officials with their Nigerien counterparts; distributes texts, transcripts, and articles that explain U.S. policies; and informs the Ambassador and the State Department about Nigerien media coverage of issues related to U.S. policies.  The Section also manages cultural and educational activities including exchange programs such as the Fulbright & Humphrey fellowship programs and the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP); U.S. speaker programs; American cultural presentations; and conferences with local experts on issues of mutual U.S.-Nigerien interest.  The American Cultural Center is a full-service lending/research library with access to the Internet and multiple on-line databases.  It also has an expansive collection of books, periodicals and audio-visual materials available in English and French. American Cultural Center staff are available during regular business hours and by special appointment, to assist with requests for targeted research.  They also offer educational advising services for students interested in studying in the United States.

EducationUSA Adviser

The EducationUSA Advisor, based at the American Cultural Center, provides guidance to prospective students, including:

  • One-on-one advising sessions during appointments or walk-in visits to the American Cultural Center;
  • Providing information and answering questions about American universities and the U.S. educational system by mail, telephone, or email; and
  • Assisting students throughout the application process.

You can meet the EducationUSA Adviser at the American Cultural Center on Mondays and Thursdays from 14:30 to 16:30 or by appointment.

Services

The Commercial Service’s office at the U.S. Embassy is staffed by the State Department and provides information regarding U.S. commercial relations in the Africa, which is available from the U.S.Department of Commerce Africa page.

The Commercial Service exists in order to assist U.S. exporters and investors in international markets. For example, our office can provide U.S. business visitors with counseling, translation services, and direct introductions to key decision makers, with background checks on local companies of interest to potential U.S. investors or joint venture partners, and other useful vehicles.
