Researchers conduct comprehensive energy usage assessments to understand past and projected electricity and water consumption of U.S. data centers. These studies quantify trends, equipment impacts, and growth drivers, particularly the rapid expansion in computing demand due to AI, helping stakeholders anticipate future load and infrastructure needs.
Tools and Analytical Methods for Optimization
The Data Center Energy Analysis team, as part of the Berkeley Lab Center of Expertise for Data Center Energy, develops and deploys analytical tools to diagnose energy use across systems (IT hardware, power delivery, cooling) and to identify performance and efficiency opportunities. These tools support operators in benchmarking, estimating potential savings, and designing energy-smart operational strategies for diverse data center types.
