Overview

The Consulate General Belfast provides consular services for Northern Ireland.

The Consulate General provides services for U.S. citizens as well as nonimmigrant visa services.

The Consulate is not open for walk-in visa inquiries.

Our hours of operation are Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All offices are closed on Saturday, Sunday, and U.S., British and Northern Irish holidays.

General Emergency Information

    Dialing from the U.K.:
  • If a crime is in progress or you are in danger, you should dial 999, the emergency services telephone number in the UK. They can provide emergency police, ambulance and/or fire services.
  • You should dial 101 to report a crime that is not an emergency, to give non-emergency information to the police and to make enquiries.
Dialing from the U.S.: If you are in the U.S. and you need to contact the UK emergency services on behalf of someone in the UK:
  • Dial 011 44 999 for emergency police, ambulance and/or fire services
  • Dial 011 44 101 for non-emergency police services.

Passport Services


If you need to renew an adult passport and you do not plan to travel within the next 4 weeks and you are eligible for passport renewal by-mail, please follow the instructions at Adult Passport Renewal to submit your application by mail to Embassy London.
vMost other passport services require an appointment. Instructions on how to book an appointment together with application forms and information about documentary requirements can be found on the Passport Services page. If no appointments are available when you first check the online booking calendar, please check it regularly for newly released appointments and cancellations.

If you are unable to schedule an appointment online at least 4 weeks before you plan to travel, please email acsbelfast@state.gov stating your location in Northern Ireland, the service(s) you require and your intended travel date.

Internal Revenue Service

There is no Internal Revenue Service (IRS), or Social Security Administration (SSA) representation in Belfast.  The IRS office at the U.S. Embassy in London has closed but we maintain a list of links and tax-preparation services.  For information about the Federal Benefits/Social Security Administration, please see here.

Notary Services

If your requirement is a matter of urgency, you may consider going through the British system for notarial services. Documents notarized in this way are acceptable for use in the U. S. as they comply with the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. Notarization under this system is a two-step process.

Administrative Processing Belfast

If your application has been refused under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act for administrative processing, the consular section will notify you when it is complete or if additional information is required from you. Please be advised that we do not know how long administrative processing will take. It can take several weeks, months or even years in some cases. If you left your passport at the Consulate, we will process your application to conclusion as soon as the administrative processing of your case has been completed and your passport will be returned to you as per your booking. If you did not leave your passport at the Consulate, we will contact you by email when the administrative processing of your case has been completed to request you to submit your passport to us for visa processing. If you change your email address, email consularbelfast@state.gov.

DHS “Waiver of Ineligibility” Processing

Waivers of Ineligibility are processed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Estimated current processing time: 9 – 12 months. Note that this is an estimate only and it can take longer. We have no control over DHS processing times.

Immigrant Visas

An immigrant visa is required by anyone seeking to take up indefinite or permanent residence in the United States. The Consulate General in Belfast does not process immigrant or fiance(e) visas. The Embassy in London is responsible for processing immigrant and fiance(e) visas for residents of the United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland.
