Vital Records and Statistics Division

About Us

The Vital Records and Statistics Division (VRSD) issues birth, death, and marriage certificates that help people access important benefits like healthcare, insurance, and other social services. VRSD has three main responsibilities: registering vital events, issuing and updating vital records, and compiling, reviewing, and sharing statistics based on these records, all while ensuring privacy is maintained.

How We Help

  • We track life events. We issue birth, death and marriages certificates for the State of California.
  • We issue and update records. Need a copy or correction? We can assist.
  • We protect your information. Privacy and security guide everything we do.
  • We review health data. We turn vital records into vital statistics that help California understand health trends.

Why It Matters

The data we collect helps:

  • State and local leaders plan and improve public health programs.
  • Agencies and community groups understand health needs.
  • Organizations make better decisions about services and support.
