Requests for Computing Time for the 2027 Operational Year Due July 20

All NASA mission directorates are currently gathering requests for high-end computing time on resources at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) facility for awards to begin October 1, 2026. The deadline for submitting requests is July 20, 2026.

PIs for new and continuing projects running at NAS will need to submit their allocation requests to NASA's HEC Request Management System (RMS).

NASA Releases Powerful LAVA Software to US Aerospace Industry

For years, NASA engineers have turned to the NAS-developed Launch, Ascent, and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) framework to solve airflow challenges that could mean the difference between mission success or failure. When engineers need to know how a spacecraft will navigate re-entry or whether a new aircraft wing design will create enough lift, they turn to LAVA. NASA recently released this tool to the aerospace community. The same computational tools simulating Mars landers, predicting launch environments, and optimizing aircraft for efficiency is now available to U.S. researchers, companies, and innovators.

Chimera Grid Tools Version 3.0 Released

The Chimera Grid Tools (CGT) team at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Divison recently released version 3.0 of the industry-standard computational fluid dynamics analysis software package.

CGT was originally released in 1999 and is used in a wide variety of disciplines, including aerospace, marine, automotive, environmental, and sports. It's available for by request through NASA's Software Library.

NASA Launches Its Most Powerful, Efficient Supercomputer

NASA is announcing the availability of its newest supercomputer, Athena, an advanced system designed to support a new generation of missions and research projects. Housed in the agency’s Modular Supercomputing Facility at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, Athena delivers more computing power than any other NASA system, surpassing the capabilities of its predecessors, Aitken and Pleiades, in power and efficiency.

NASA Simulations Improve Artemis II Launch Environment

Using data from the 2022 Artemis I launch, NAS researchers used their LAVA software to simulate complex interactions between the rocket plume and a system that pumps water to suppress sound during launch. Results improved understanding of the plume interaction with the mobile launcher platform. Using this knowledge, aerospace engineers refined the design plume pressures and adapted the launch platform to endure those pressures for Artemis II, NASA’s first mission with crew aboard the SLS and Orion.
