Severe Weather and Heavy Rainfall in the Midwest and Desert Southwest; Mid-Summer Heat Continues

Severe thunderstorm and heavy rainfall are possible in the Midwest into the Central Appalachians and the Desert Southwest early this week. Storms are also expected in parts of the northern Plains today. Fire weather and air quality concerns will persist across portions of the West. With the chance of thunderstorms across the coast this weekend, here are some tips to stay safe when encountering a storm.

Today's greatest chance for rain will generally be east of I-37, though we are not expecting a washout, but a reprieve from a seasonally warm day. Highs will climb into the 90s to low 100s with 15-20 mph southeast winds.

Isolated showers are moving onshore this morning, with partly cloudy skies forecast this afternoon with highs in the upper 80s. There is a low risk of rip currents. However, dangerous swimming conditions are still possible, especially near piers and jetties.

Tonight, winds will remain a bit breezier across the western Brush Country (southeast winds at 15-20 mph) with partly cloudy skies. Lows will be in the low 80s along the coast and in the upper 70s across much of South Texas.

Rain chances remain low (<10%) for much of the week ahead. Across the Brush Country, elevated fire risk settle in through Wednesday while Wednesday and Thursday sees the highest HeatRisk west of I-37. Stay hydrated and take plenty of AC/shade breaks if spending time outdoors.
