Showers and Storms in the East; Dangerously Hot and Dry in the West

Scattered showers and storms are expected across portions of the Central and Eastern U.S. through the end of the week. Meanwhile, dangerous heat will intensify across the Desert Southwest and Intermountain West. WSR-88D Radar

This is our WSR-88D, which stands for Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 (the prototype radar was built in 1988). It is located in Ocean County, NJ on the grounds of Fort Dix. It observes the presence of, and calculates the speed and direction of severe weather elements such as tornadoes and violent thunderstorms. The WSR-88D also provides quantitative area precipitation measurements, important in hydrologic forecasting of potential flooding. The severe weather and motion detection capabilities offered by the WSR-88D increase the accuracy and timeliness of National Weather Service warning services.
