Purpose
The Ohio Checkbook provides a searchable online database of both local and state real-time financial and transactional information. According to Section 126.21 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Ohio Checkbook retains transparency of the state accounting system through the site.
Ohioans can utilize this information to view how both local and state collect, budget and spend public resources. Financial information is provided in multiple formats with the capability to drill in detail from summarized data to individual expense transactions. Citizens can use this information to make educated decisions and provide feedback to their legislators and other public servants who work for the State of Ohio.
The Home Page
Users can enter The Ohio Checkbook viewing real-time data filtering, while accessing state and local financial information, such as: Year-to-Year State Revenue, State Budget (by function), State Spending (by expense type), State Contracts, Year-to-Year State Spending and Employee Salaries. The FAQ page and Glossary are additional tools available for resource.
Menu
The left-side menu is the primary source for navigating throughout The Ohio Checkbook site. The menu is permanently positioned on the left-side of each page as it contains links to all items on the home page, while offering a drop-down functionality to link to sub-pages within the site.
"Real-Time" Data Filtering
Filtering the real-time data enables users to retrieve progressively more detailed financial information simply by clicking on the data fields, such as: bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs. When attempting to return to a previous view when filtering, users should use the left side of the visual to return to a previously viewed level. Clicking the browser's back button will return visitors to the Ohio Checkbook home page.
Guides
When filtering real-time data, a guide will appear on the left side of the screen to inform users where they are in the pathway. The guide allows users to jump to previous level of filtering without needing to start at the original drill path.
Searches
The Ohio Checkbook contains a search bar located on the home page that allows users to type a word or phrase, the search engine will automatically populate with potential terms. Users may click on the term that best fits their search and will be directed to that page within the Ohio Checkbook site.
Changing Views
When viewing data in the Ohio Checkbook site, users can choose the display of financial information in a different format opposed to the default. Majority of data is defaulted in bar graph or pie chart form., however users can toggle their view by clicking "Change View" on the page and select a new option from the drop-down menu.
Downloads
Real-time data shown on the Ohio Checkbook is available for download in PDF and Excel format. In the upper right corner of each page, to download click the "Download" button and select a file type to download the data.
