The Department of State is committed to ensuring fair and humane treatment for U.S. citizens imprisoned overseas. We stand ready to assist incarcerated citizens and their families within the limits of our authority in accordance with international law, domestic and foreign law. List of Local Attorneys

The Department of State helps the family and friends of U.S. citizens who die abroad. We inform the U.S. citizen’s next-of-kin of the death and we provide information on arrangements for local burial or the return of remains to the United States and on disposition of estates and personal effects. We also issue a Consular Report of Death Abroad, an official record of death.

The Department of State’s Office of Children’s Issues works to resolve and prevent cases of international parental child abduction and to help children and families involved in abduction cases. For more information, see our international parental child abduction page on travel.state.gov.

The Department of State helps U.S. citizens who are victims of crime overseas. We connect crime victims with police and other services and provide information and resources to assist with physical, emotional, and/or financial injuries from crime.

Social Security’s Earnings & International Operations (EIO) manages the Social Security program outside the U.S. and implements the benefit provisions of international agreements.

A child born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents may acquire U.S. citizenship at birth if certain statutory requirements are met. The child’s parents may apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) to document that the child is a U.S. citizen.

The U.S. Embassy in San Salvador is committed to assisting U.S. Citizens who choose to adopt children from El Salvador. Our Adoption Team is eager to help inform parents about the process; however, U.S. law prevents us from providing legal counsel or acting as a legal advocate or representative on behalf of prospective adoptive parents. The United States of America and El Salvador have a Bilateral Child Support Agreement for the Enforcement of Maintenance Obligations.

U.S. embassy and consulate personnel cannot perform marriages. Depending on the local law, civil or religious officials generally perform marriages. If your marriage overseas was performed in accordance with local law, it is valid in the country where it took place. Whether your marriage is recognized elsewhere depends on the laws of that place.

If you get married abroad and need to know if your marriage will be recognized in the United States and what documentation may be needed, contact the office of the Attorney General of your state of residence in the United States.

The majority have had training overseas, are familiar with U.S. medical care, and have a reasonable command of English. The list is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive nor does it represent either a guarantee of competence or endorsement by the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy. It does indicate that the Embassy Community has utilized them in the past.

U.S. citizens may be asked to present a “certificate of good conduct” or “lack of a criminal record” for a variety of reasons for use abroad including adoption, school attendance, employment, etc.
