Specially trained social workers provide assistance to families with children birth-five years who are at risk for developmental delays, and to women and their families who desire help finding resources and services to meet their needs during pregnancy.
Family Health Services provides well and sick care for families with Medicaid, Health Choice, Insurance, and self-pay clients. Services include physical exams for adults who are established patients, physical exams for children and women’s health services. Call 704-216-8782 for an appointment.
Family Planning services including exams, birth control, education and counseling are provided to women and men. Fees are based on a sliding scale and Medicaid is accepted. Call 704-216-8782 for an appointment.
Community Health Education
Community Health Educators help individuals and communities adopt a healthy lifestyle through programs and services. Staff conduct community presentations on a variety of health-related topics including chronic disease, wellness, prevention, and responsible decision-making.
Community Health Educators promote and assist in creating policy and environmental changes that support healthy behaviors, and work with community stakeholders to create and manage sustainable programs geared towards improving health outcomes in target populations.
Staff inform the community about health issues that impact our everyday lives, coordinate the Community Health Assessment (CHA) process, publish the State of the County Health Report (SOTCH), and provide local health statistics as requested.
Required immunizations are provided to children birth through the age of 18 at no charge. Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) and Hepatitis B are provided to adults but there may be a charge. Tetanus boosters are provided at no charge. Flu vaccines are provided in the fall. Pneumonia is provided according to the current fee schedule. Call for an appointment.

Prenatal Services
Prenatal care is provided to low-income residents of Rowan County by health department staff and local obstetricians on Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon. A sliding fee scale based on financial eligibility is applied and Medicaid is accepted. With proof of a positive pregnancy test, an appointment may be made for prenatal services by calling 704-216-8882.
Two dentists and dental health staff provide dental care in a clinic setting to children through 18 years of age. Medicaid and Health Choice insurance are accepted. Visit the Smile Center page for more information.
Women, Infants & Children (WIC)
WIC is a nutritional program for women, infants and children that provides nutritional information and vouchers for healthy foods at no cost. Applicants must be seen by WIC staff to determine eligibility by appointment only.
Please call for an appointment; they are necessary for most health-related services. Walk-ins are accepted. The cost of most services are based on your income. If you qualify for Medicaid or other financial aid programs there may be no charge.
Eligibility
Adult health, Child Health, Communicable Disease and Tuberculosis services are only provided for residents of Rowan County. Charges are based on sliding fee scales. A payment toward service is required prior to any Adult Health visit; remaining balance is expected at the time of visit.
Payment is expected for all clinical program services at the time of visit. Payment plans may be set up when needed. Clients need to bring proof of household income, a photo ID and their insurance card with them to appointments.
