History

The United States of America has been represented in Sumatra and maintained a consulate in the city of Medan from Indonesia’s independence in 1949.

The fourth-largest island in the world, Sumatra is both culturally and ecologically rich. Sumatra’s rainforests are home to elephants, orangutans, tigers, and other rare animals.

The Consulate is located in Medan, the largest city on Sumatra and the capital of the province of North Sumatra. Medan is a major hub of trade and industry. Strategically positioned close to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with short direct flights from Kualanamu International Airport, Medan is both a transit point to many popular tourist destinations and a gateway for regional and international trade.

Our Work

The U.S. Consulate in Medan serves a consular district of nearly 60 million people in 10 provinces including Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, Riau, Bangka Belitung, Jambi, and Riau Islands. With a consular district that borders the South China Sea, this post addresses key diplomatic, economic, and security interests for the United States. The district also includes the Batam Free Trade Zone, where U.S. companies such tens of thousands of Indonesians, as well as the Strait of Malacca, one of the most important shipping lanes in the world.

Consulate Medan works to implement the core elements of the Comprehensive Partnership between the United States and Indonesia in Sumatra. Our cooperation efforts in Sumatra include expanding trade and investment ties, increased exchange and cooperation in education and scientific research, and working together to promote peace and security in the Indo-Pacific. The consulate also works to support U.S. businesses operating in Sumatra by helping them better understand opportunities, challenges, and the legal environment in Sumatra.
