The Office of Structures is responsible for almost all aspects of bridge evaluation, design, quality assurance and construction support. The office also is typically responsible for large sign structures and larger culverts.

 

Structure Management Bureau

The Structure Management Bureau provides bridge data collection and evaluation services to facilitate the preservation, structural integrity and safety of existing bridges and to assist in establishing technically appropriate capital projects. It is also responsible for Division activities regarding program and project development tracking.

Structure Specialties Engineering Bureau

The Structure Specialties Engineering Bureau approves fabrication plans and processes for structural steel and precast concrete bridges. It also approves equipment and procedures for foundation construction, changes to the plans and in the materials used in their construction. Technical assistance is provided to others in the Department in these fields, and in the field of hydraulics, during bridge design and construction, and emergency repairs.

Structure Design Bureau

The Structures Design Bureau produces bridge plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E's) for the Department's capital program. It is also responsible for providing regional design assistance and Quality Assurance of technical designs and plans through all phases of bridge replacement and bridge rehabilitation projects across the state.  The Structures Design Bureau is also responsible for training structures design staff and providing engineering leadership and oversight to structures design statewide. It also leads accelerated structural design projects for the Office, including priority projects and emergency response.

Structure Policy & Innovation Bureau

The Structure Policy & Innovation Bureau is responsible for providing Quality Assurance of technical designs and plans. It manages consultants doing structural designs and provides specialized technical design assistance for unique structures as well as technical reviews of special specifications. It provides preliminary plans for new and replacement bridge projects, standard details and practices for all designs. Bridge Cost Estimating and Hydraulic Engineering Services are provided. It is also responsible for Division activities regarding program and project development tracking.
